Herpes is caused by two viruses:

Herpes simplex virus type 1
Herpes simplex virus type 2

The type 1 virus is responsible for common cold sores and can be transmitted through fluids from the mouth. Type 1 is responsible for some cases of genital herpes cases. It can also spread from the mouth to the genitals during oral sex.

The type 2 virus causes most of the genital herpes cases. It can be spread through secretions from the mouth or genitals.

Herpes is spread from one person to another by skin-to-skin contact. The virus is shed from visible sores, blisters, or a rash during outbreaks. However, it can also be shed from the affected area between outbreaks of symptoms.

Because the virus is transmitted through secretions from the mouth or genital tissue, common sites of infection in men include:

• Inner thighs
• Scrotum
• Shaft and head of the penis

Common sites of infection in women include:

• Anus
• Cervix
• Inner thighs
• Labia
• Vagina

Of course, the mouth can also be a site of infection in both sexes.

Genital herpes cannot in fact be cured. However, there are several natural solutions and remedies to help treat herpes.

Taking vitamin C is beneficial as it enhances the immune system by acting as an antioxidant, antihistamine, antiviral and antifungal. Vitamin C may also enhance the activity of white blood cells and promote production of interferon-specific immunoactive proteins which are released by blood cells in response to viral infections.

Several clinical trials have shown that Zinc helps to reduce the frequency and severity of herpes outbreaks. Zinc may slow down the ability of the herpes virus from reproducing itself, particularly when it is applied topically to lesions. A daily supplementation of zinc appears to enhance cell mediated immunity and helps the immune system to identify and fight the virus.

Another remedy which has shown to be effective is gypsy mushroom. It contains chemicals that fight both herpes simplex virus type 1 and type 2.

It has been shown that Lysine is important in the prevention and treatment of herpes outbreaks. It is believed by some researchers that a diet high in arginine and low in lysine may activate the herpes virus and promote outbreaks. Herpes requires arginine; therefore, a diet that is high in lysine may block arginine and prevent it from activating the virus. Most foods that are high in protein contain amino acids, including both arginine and lysine. Chocolate, nuts, and grains are all high in arginine, whilst relatively low in lysine. Legumes are high in lysine and low in arginine.

It has been shown that applying bee propolis to sores produced from a genital herpes outbreak can help to heal the sores more rapidly. Propolis is a waxy substance that is produced by honeybees.

Another excellent remedy is Aloe Vera. This can be applied topically to lesions as well as be taken internally for its antiviral effect. It has been identified, through recent research, that aloe vera gel has several immune stimulating compounds.
